Do-it-yourself drain cleaning. Why it's a bad idea?

It has happened to everyone: you turn on the water in the sink, shower or tub and instead of running down the drain, it starts flowing back. After seeing countless commercials for liquid cleaners, your first thought is to grab that bottle of thick blue liquid with scary chemicals in it because it will do the job quickly, right?

THE BAD NEWS ABOUT INHABITANTS

The bad news that companies that make sewage cleaners won't tell you these chemicals are bad for your pipes, regardless of whether the bottle claims to be "safe on the pipes." It should suffice to say that there is a warning on the back of the bottle to call your local poison control center if the substance touches your skin.

If you insist on trying a liquid-based solution to eliminate small clogs, choose an all-natural enzyme product. These products use natural enzymes to break down organic material and bacteria that clog pipes, but don't break down particularly hard clogs. These products are best used for monthly drain maintenance rather than clog cleaning, but we have some simpler (and less expensive) DIY solutions you can try before buying an expensive product.

AVOIDING DRAIN DRAINS: WHAT NOT TO PUT THE DRAIN

Of course, the best way to avoid a clogged drain is to use it correctly in the first place. Here is a list of the most common things homeowners put down (or toilet) that can cause serious problems over time:

  • Fat, grease or oil (pour them into a jar, wait for them to solidify, then throw them away!)
  • Eggshells
  • Pasta, rice and potatoes (starchy things)
  • Bone
  • Fibrous or fibrous foods
  • Coffee
  • grounds Feminine products (sanitary napkins, etc.) )
  • Fabrics and paper towels
  • Flushable wipes
  • Hair (take a cap for the shower or bath!)
